The Chinese state-owned news agency is the world's largest, employing 10,000 people and operating from 107 international bureaux. The consultancy provides training in Social Affairs Reporting for Xinhua.

The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service

Scotland's prosecution service commissioned the consultancy to carry out a review of its media relations and communications services in late 2009.

Peoples Media Ltd

The publishers of Nigeria's new national newspaper – the Peoples Daily (no apostrophe!) – commissioned us to help redesign and relaunch the paper as a daily publication in November 2009.

The Thomson Foundation

The Foundation is a UK-based charity which trains journalists internationally. In the last 40 years, the Foundation has trained thousands of journalists in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, South America and the Pacific region.

Business Club Scotland

Charles is an honorary Ambassador for BusinessClubScotland, launched under the auspices of SCDI and backed by the Scottish Government. It aims to provide small to medium-size enterprises (SMEs) in Scotland with networking and business development opportunities through events such as the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Lanarkshire Economic Forum

Charles chaired the 2009 LEF conference which brought together key stakeholders in the private and public sectors to focus on a future economic strategy for North and South Lanarkshire.

Media Commentary

Charles has contributed to Newsnight Scotland, BBC Radio 4, Radio 5 and Radio Scotland; Real Radio and Smooth Radio on media issues of the day.

Other interests

As a guest speaker, Charles has addressed audiences at Glasgow Caledonian University, the University of Glasgow, the China Media Centre, the Scottish Council for Development and Industry, Common Purpose, KPMG Scotland, Lanarkshire Chamber of Commerce, the Society of Editors and the Newspaper Society.

Charles has undertaken a Winston Churchill Media Fellowship in the USA and Canada, studying the impact of new technology on the practice of journalism.

He was a VSO volunteer in Papua New Guinea, managing a major literacy project for two years, and is currently a member of the West of Scotland board of Maggie's Cancer Care Centres.
